Rainbow Haven Beach and Lawrencetown Beach in the Halifax region have been reopened for swimming as of Monday following a temporary closure over the weekend due to elevated bacteria levels. Advisories issued on Friday had cautioned against swimming at both beaches, citing potential health risks. Water quality tests conducted at the beaches revealed bacteria levels exceeding the acceptable threshold established by the Department of Environment and Climate Change.
Paul D’Eon, the director of the Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service, reported that samples were taken early Friday morning, detecting heightened levels of enterococci, a bacteria commonly found in saltwater that functions similarly to E. coli found in freshwater sources. Subsequent laboratory results on Monday confirmed that the water was once again safe for swimming, as per Nova Scotia Parks.
