A Saskatchewan firm is engaged in hydrogen drilling to demonstrate its viability for large-scale extraction from the ground, rather than reliance on fossil fuels. Recently, Regina-based Max Power Mining commenced drilling its third well at the Lawson Complex in southern Saskatchewan, aiming to establish the world’s first major commercial natural hydrogen system. Chad Levesque, the company’s president, emphasized the importance of hydrogen in various industries such as ammonia production, petroleum refining, and transitioning to cleaner energy sources.
Hydrogen is a versatile gas that can serve as a fuel or be utilized in fuel cells to generate electricity, producing only water as a byproduct and no direct greenhouse gas emissions. While traditional hydrogen production methods predominantly rely on fossil fuels, resulting in significant carbon emissions, the emergence of green hydrogen produced through electrolysis offers a cleaner alternative. Natural hydrogen, also known as white hydrogen, presents a promising solution as it can be extracted with relatively lower greenhouse gas emissions compared to industrial production processes.
The geological uniqueness of Saskatchewan allows for the accumulation of hydrogen in porous sand beds sealed under layers of shale and salt. Although challenges remain, including the extraction of hydrogen dissolved in water, ongoing projects like those in Nova Scotia and France are at an early stage of development. While the potential impact of white hydrogen on global decarbonization efforts is still uncertain, ongoing research and exploration aim to unlock its full potential.
