Ottawa’s public transportation network is set to undergo significant changes by the end of August, with more details now available. OC Transpo is gearing up for a surge in ridership as part of a $29-million plan to accommodate the return of federal workers to downtown offices.
Anticipating an additional 65,000 trips per week in Ottawa’s core, OC Transpo views public transit as crucial given the limited capacity of road networks to handle increased private vehicle traffic. The transit plan, which was approved last month, includes enhancements such as increased O-Train service during peak hours, improvements to para transport systems, introduction of new express bus routes, and better connections from park-and-ride locations to major job centers.
Rick Leary, the city’s transit services general manager, outlined key features of the plan, with specific stop and schedule information available on the OC Transpo website. Notable additions include seven Express routes (designated in the 500s) aimed at connecting transit stations to key employment areas more efficiently.
Moreover, weekday service changes will see increased trips on various routes, along with more accurate and reliable schedules on 22 routes. Additionally, adjustments like removing underutilized stops and rerouting certain bus lines are part of the seasonal tweaks. However, the planned east extension of the O-Train will not be operational by the end of August.
The broader Transportation and Mobility Strategy and Action Plan encompasses initiatives beyond transit improvements, including traffic management measures, construction adjustments, cycling and pedestrian infrastructure enhancements, and proposed parking changes. These developments aim to address the evolving transportation needs in Ottawa as federal workers gradually return to office settings.
