In northeastern Alberta, researchers are addressing copper deficiencies in cattle by applying the mineral to wheat crops to enhance their fertility and well-being. Simultaneously, they are experimenting with various cover crops to determine the most effective weed suppression methods, aiming to reduce herbicide usage.
Jay Cory, a farmer and chair of the Lakeland Agricultural Research Association (LARA), emphasized the value of research in sparking new ideas and insights for farmers. Located around 250 kilometers northeast of Edmonton, the Fort Kent research field serves as the testing ground for LARA’s non-profit agricultural research initiatives.
Recently, local producers were invited to tour the facility and observe the ongoing trials, which focus on enhancing productivity and sustainability through research on crop varieties and farming practices.
Maria Angelica Ouellette, a research scientist with LARA, highlighted the organization’s commitment to conducting trials under real-world conditions, taking into account factors like changing weather patterns.
