A series of mudslides have obstructed the South Klondike Highway in the vicinity of Carcross, Yukon, disrupting travel between the territory and the southeastern Alaskan town of Skagway. The closure spans from kilometer 106 to 24, effectively halting traffic from Carcross through northern British Columbia and down to the U.S.-Canada border. The Yukon Department of Highways and Public Works reported the highway closure in a Facebook update on Tuesday evening, citing the need for assessment following multiple mudslides.
Authorities confirmed that no vehicles were caught in the mudslides, but two cruise ship passenger tour buses are stranded due to the road closure. Alerts from the Skagway Police Department indicated that the cleanup operation would take some time, possibly extending the closure for several days. The unstable mountainside conditions require assessment by a geologist before road clearing can proceed.
To accommodate tours, a partial reopening of the highway is planned for Wednesday morning, allowing traffic from the international border up to the Yukon-British Columbia border, but restricting passage beyond kilometer 80.
