British Couple’s Son Worries Amid Iran Embassy Closure

The son of a British couple detained in Iran has expressed his concern for their safety following the closure of the UK embassy in Tehran during ongoing anti-regime protests.

Craig and Lindsay Foreman, who were on a global motorcycle journey, were arrested by Iranian authorities in January 2025 on espionage charges. Despite denying the allegations, they are currently held in a daunting Iranian prison. Their son, Joe Bennett, fears for their well-being in the midst of national turmoil marked by arrests, violence, and executions.

Joe disclosed that Iranian prisons are facing overcrowding due to the surge in arrests linked to the protests. In a recent conversation, his parents described the unsafe and frightening conditions inside the jail.

During an interview with BBC Newsnight, Joe highlighted the unsanitary and overcrowded conditions in the prison, including vermin infestation and daily fights. He expressed concern over the impact of the UK embassy closure on efforts to secure his parents’ release.

A government spokesperson confirmed the temporary closure of the British Embassy in Tehran, stating that operations would continue remotely. Joe revealed that his parents had planned to seek refuge at the embassy if released, but this option is now uncertain. Legal representatives have submitted a bail application on behalf of Craig and Lindsay.

Despite ongoing assessments by the Foreign and Commonwealth Development Office, the situation remains precarious. Joe emphasized the deteriorating physical health of his parents at Evin Prison, citing challenges such as lack of ventilation, limited exercise opportunities, weight loss, dental issues, and inadequate medical care.
