Former England Cricketer Tony Pigott Dies at 67

Former England cricketer Tony Pigott, known for his remarkable career with over 1,000 wickets, has passed away at 67. Pigott, a former Sussex seam bowler, succumbed to a heart attack after battling oesophageal cancer. His legacy includes a notable performance in the County Championship and a memorable one-off appearance for England that has become part of cricket folklore.

In 1984, Pigott received a sudden call-up to play for England against New Zealand in Christchurch, despite his upcoming wedding. Choosing to honor his commitment to the national team, he delayed his wedding plans and traveled to New Zealand, where he managed to secure two wickets. Unfortunately, his debut match did not end favorably as England suffered a heavy defeat, leading to Pigott never representing his country again.

At the county level, Pigott dedicated 18 years to Sussex before transferring to Surrey in 1994 due to recurring injuries. Eventually returning to Sussex in 1997, he later became the CEO of the club after orchestrating a successful takeover. Pigott played a pivotal role in laying the groundwork for Sussex’s triumph in the County Championship of 2003 and spearheaded the installation of floodlights at Hove, making it the first cricket ground in the UK with such facilities. He was affectionately nicknamed ‘Lester,’ possibly inspired by the renowned jockey, Lester Piggott.

Following Pigott’s demise, tributes poured in from the cricket community. Former Sussex captain Chris Adams expressed his heartfelt condolences, highlighting Pigott’s significant impact on the club’s history and his personal life. Adams credited Pigott for influencing his decision to join Sussex and praised him for his positive and influential character.

Additionally, Adams shared a tribute on social media, reflecting on Pigott’s endearing personality and the profound impact he had on those who knew him. Ian Gould, a former Sussex wicket-keeper and umpire, also mourned Pigott’s passing, describing him as a remarkable character.
