In 2025, global temperatures experienced a slight decrease, yet concerns linger regarding the ongoing impact of climate change on communities worldwide. The welfare of wildlife remains a pressing issue, with numerous species facing threats due to habitat shifts and deteriorating environmental conditions.
Despite these challenges, various organizations and advocates are actively working to improve conditions for animals globally. One approach involves constructing infrastructure that facilitates wildlife movement over or around human-made obstacles.
A prominent example is the Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing, currently being built northwest of Los Angeles. Upon completion, it will stand as the largest animal crossing globally. This £68 million megaproject is situated over the 101 Freeway in Agoura Hills and has been in the planning stages for decades.
Construction commenced on the site in early 2022, with an initial target opening date set for early 2026. However, due to adverse weather conditions affecting the region and causing significant delays, the launch has been rescheduled to November 2026.
Beth Pratt, a project spokesperson, explained that storms necessitated redoing work on the massive supports and groundwork, leading to multiple revisions due to muddy conditions. Despite the nearly one-year delay in completion, there is optimism that the benefits for local wildlife will be substantial, with estimates indicating a significant reduction in animal fatalities caused by vehicles.
A similar crossing near Salt Lake City on Interstate 80 in Utah reportedly decreased animal-vehicle collisions by 77%. Beth, also serving as California’s regional director for the National Wildlife Federation, emphasized the necessity of finding solutions to safeguard the wildlife population, particularly the mountain lions.
The bridge is named in honor of Wallis Annenberg, a philanthropist who played a pivotal role in the project and passed away last year at 86. Beyond her environmental efforts, Wallis championed science and education initiatives passionately. Her family, in a statement to the Los Angeles Times after her passing, highlighted her enduring spirit and wisdom.
