Serena and Venus Williams have teamed up once again for the upcoming U.S. Open tournament. The sisters, who have previously won the event twice, secured a wild card entry on Wednesday to play doubles together.
Serena Williams made a comeback to tennis this summer after a four-year hiatus, and the duo was initially set to compete at Wimbledon. However, Serena had to withdraw due to a knee injury following a singles match loss. Their recent appearance at the Cincinnati Open resulted in a first-round defeat.
With a successful track record at the U.S. Open, having claimed the doubles title in 1999 and 2009 with a 27-7 record in nine appearances, the Williams sisters last played together in 2022, bowing out in the opening round, which was anticipated to be Serena’s farewell match at Flushing Meadows.
During the ongoing tournament, Serena, aged 44, partnered with Carlos Alcaraz for mixed doubles, registering one victory before being eliminated in the quarterfinals. On the other hand, Venus, aged 46, is competing in the women’s singles category.
The Williams sisters boast an impressive tally of 14 Grand Slam doubles titles and Olympic gold medals in 2000, 2008, and 2012. They also held the top spot in the women’s doubles rankings for eight weeks.
While Serena decided not to participate in singles at the U.S. Open, where she has clinched six of her 23 Grand Slam singles titles, she felt fit enough to compete in doubles, earning wild card entries for both events.
Their initial success at the U.S. Open doubles coincided with Serena’s first singles victory at the tournament, with their dominance peaking about ten years later. They claimed victories at the Australian Open and Wimbledon in 2009, followed by another win at Flushing Meadows. The sisters continued their winning streak by securing the Australian Open and French Open titles in 2010, holding all four major trophies simultaneously.
The commencement of the women’s doubles tournament is scheduled for September 3rd.
