Max Verstappen has expressed his wish to change his race number to three for the 2026 season if he loses the F1 title and forfeits the number one designation on his Red Bull car.
Initially, the 28-year-old used number 33 when he first joined the sport, a number closely associated with him in racing circles. However, he picked this number because his future teammate Daniel Ricciardo had already claimed number three.
After winning his first world championship in 2021, Verstappen opted for number one, reserved for defending champions, and has kept it since then. However, with the 2025 title likely going to either Lando Norris or Oscar Piastri, the Red Bull driver faces a decision.
While speaking at the Las Vegas Grand Prix, Verstappen confirmed his plan to switch to number three from 2026 onwards, pending approval from both the FIA and Ricciardo. Ricciardo retired from motorsport earlier this year after leaving Racing Bulls in the 2024 season.
Responding to questions about the potential change, Verstappen said, “That’s a good question. You have to get approval for it because the number is not free yet due to Daniel Ricciardo. He hasn’t been out of Formula One for two years.”
He added, “I will consider it over the winter, but my favorite number is #3. We need to see if it’s feasible.” Verstappen humorously mentioned his interest in number 69 but acknowledged his father’s disapproval. He also mentioned liking numbers 27, 2, and 7 for their visual appeal.
Fortunately, Ricciardo is unlikely to block Verstappen’s request as the two maintain a strong friendship even after Ricciardo’s move to Renault.
Sky has enhanced its Ultimate TV and Sky Sports bundle to include HBO Max, Netflix, Disney+, discovery+, and Hayu, along with 135 channels and comprehensive coverage of Formula 1, Premier League, EFL, darts, and golf.
In a letter to fans in September, Ricciardo announced his partnership with Ford as a Global Ford Racing Ambassador, expressing his continued passion for anything related to motorsports even though his racing days are over.
