A television host is pushing for a complete prohibition on fireworks after a tragic incident during New Year’s left her with severe injuries. Andrea Plewig, 55, who presents the show “Astro Royal,” ended up in the hospital and lost her left eye due to a firework mishap at her home.
Recounting the ordeal, Plewig mentioned that she had taken all necessary precautions while handling the fireworks. Despite her careful preparations, a firework malfunctioned, striking her eye and causing immense pain.
This accident occurred shortly after Plewig had undergone intense chemotherapy for breast cancer. Despite efforts by medical professionals, her injured eye could not be saved. Now, Plewig is advocating for stricter controls on personal use of fireworks and is supporting the “No To Fireworks” campaign.
In the United Kingdom, various organizations such as The Firework Campaign UK, the RSPCA, and Help for Heroes are endorsing the movement. The proponents are urging for more stringent regulations to reduce the negative impact of fireworks on animals, veterans, and vulnerable individuals. Suggestions include banning public sales, reducing noise levels, and restricting fireworks displays to licensed public events.
Similar initiatives globally have garnered significant support, with numerous petitions in the UK alone amassing up to 190,000 signatures. Plewig is a strong advocate for a complete ban on fireworks, emphasizing their hazardous nature and the unforeseen consequences they pose to humans and the environment.
Her close friend and fellow TV presenter, Vera Int-Veen, 58, expressed shock over Plewig’s accident and pledged unwavering support during this challenging period. Plewig, who recently received a clean bill of health post-breast cancer treatment, still requires further surgical procedures. Her call for more stringent fireworks regulations underscores the ongoing concerns surrounding the dangers associated with private firework usage, particularly in residential settings.
