“Trade Tensions Raise Costs: Impact on Consumers and AI Industry”

Experts predict that the ongoing trade tensions between Canada and the United States will lead to increased costs for consumers and businesses across various sectors, from electronics to artificial intelligence infrastructure. Last year, Canada exported over $4 billion US worth of electronics equipment to the U.S., which is now facing new 50 per cent tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump on a wide range of goods. Notably, certain electrical boards and controllers are among the key exports targeted by the recent U.S. levies.

Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that Canada will match the U.S. tariffs dollar for dollar. This move is expected to result in higher prices as the trade dispute escalates, posing a threat to businesses on both sides of the border.

Carol McGlogan, the president and CEO of Electro-Federation Canada, expressed concerns over the devastating impact of the 50 per cent tariffs, noting that 90 per cent of their exports go to the U.S. She emphasized that price hikes will impact various sectors, such as homes, schools, and buildings, ultimately burdening taxpayers.

Evan Light, an associate professor at the University of Toronto, highlighted that products like gaming consoles and cell phones have already been experiencing price increases due to chip shortages and supply chain challenges. He anticipates that the trade tensions between Canada and the U.S. will further elevate the prices of these items.

Andrew Bell, the chief product officer at Ottawa-based Kinaxis, mentioned that the impact of tariffs extends beyond supply chains to end consumers. He emphasized that increased costs will ultimately be borne by those purchasing the products.

How Will Tariffs Affect AI Adoption?

Bloomberg News recently reported an up to 15 per cent price increase for Nvidia’s artificial intelligence chips, citing supply chain challenges. This escalation in costs could potentially hinder the adoption of AI technologies, according to University of Toronto professor Light.

Light raised concerns about the impact of rising prices on AI adoption, suggesting that the increased expenses in both the U.S. and Canada may prompt a reassessment of investments in AI technologies.
