“Surrey Climber Rescued on Mount Everest by Heroic Guide”

After spending twelve hours atop Mount Everest, Ajaypal Dhaliwal of Surrey found himself struggling to descend from the summit. Dhaliwal recounted laying on the mountainside for 23 minutes, experiencing hallucinations of a helicopter. At an elevation of 8,400 meters with depleted oxygen levels on May 20, Dhaliwal was aided by Seattle-based mountain guide Mingma Tenzin Sherpa and his team.

Sherpa noticed Dhaliwal’s distress and inability to stand, clinging to an anchor for support. Despite the challenging circumstances, Sherpa provided Dhaliwal with the necessary assistance to stabilize him. Sherpa made a crucial decision to personally assist Dhaliwal down the mountain, showcasing exemplary humanity in the face of adversity.

During their descent, the group encountered another climber from Dhaliwal’s team in need of help, but due to limited oxygen reserves, they could not provide immediate assistance. After a challenging journey, Dhaliwal and his rescuers safely reached Camp 4, nearly 8,000 meters above sea level. Tragically, two members from Dhaliwal’s climbing party did not survive the expedition.

In a ceremony held in Surrey last weekend, Dhaliwal expressed his gratitude towards Sherpa for his heroic actions, emphasizing the debt of gratitude he owes to him. Sherpa hopes that their rescue mission will inspire kindness and raise awareness about the importance of climbing with trained professionals, underscoring the unpredictable nature of mountaineering adventures.
