The City of Summerside is proactively preparing for climate change and extreme weather events with the help of a federal grant. Summerside has been awarded $59,883 from the federal government’s Green Municipal Fund, which allocated $34.2 million to 141 municipal projects. Lindsay Connolly, the city’s funding and policy specialist, mentioned that the funds will be utilized for expert consultations to determine the most suitable strategies.
Connolly highlighted the unique geographical characteristics of P.E.I. and Summerside, emphasizing the need to capitalize on these features to enhance the city’s resilience. The total cost of the Summerside project is estimated to be around $90,000, with the city covering the remaining $30,000. The initiative commenced in September 2025 and is anticipated to conclude by December 2027.
The primary goal of the project is to identify, analyze, and prioritize areas of vulnerability to natural hazards and environmental threats. Connolly emphasized the importance of leveraging resources and planning effectively to safeguard the city’s future. She emphasized that addressing climate change is a pressing issue that necessitates proactive planning and action to ensure the well-being of the municipality and its residents.
