Keir Starmer has scheduled an urgent press briefing at Downing Street today in response to the recent threats of tariffs by Donald Trump following his controversial stance on Greenland.
This move comes after various NATO nations, including the UK, cautioned the US President about the potential negative impact on international relations due to his actions. In a joint statement, these countries pledged to present a unified front and support Denmark and Greenland amidst the escalating situation.
The US President, known for his unpredictable behavior, has threatened to impose 10% tariffs on several countries, including the UK, for opposing his ambitions regarding Greenland. He also warned of raising tariffs on NATO allies to 25% if a deal concerning Greenland is not finalized by June 1.
Over the weekend, Keir Starmer publicly criticized Trump’s actions, labeling them as “completely wrong.” As a result, the Prime Minister’s planned speech focusing on cost of living issues in the North West has been postponed, with Starmer expected to address the international developments in a press conference from Downing Street.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and the UK emphasized their commitment to Arctic security as a shared interest. They expressed solidarity with Denmark and Greenland, highlighting the importance of dialogue based on principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Despite calls from some politicians to cancel the upcoming state visit by the King of the UK to the US in response to Trump’s threats, Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy reaffirmed the UK’s stance on Greenland as non-negotiable. She emphasized the need for clear communication without escalating tensions with the US.
EU ambassadors were also summoned for urgent discussions regarding President Trump’s recent tariff threats.
