“Record Rainfall Floods Tokyo: Chaos at Narita Airport”

Record-breaking rainfall in Japan caused chaos at Tokyo’s Narita airport, leaving thousands of travelers stranded as floods engulfed the area, disrupting transportation, cutting power to 20,000 homes, and claiming eight lives.

Parts of Chiba prefecture, adjacent to Tokyo, received over 360 millimeters of rain within 24 hours, leading to road and rail inundation during a peak holiday period in Japan. Chiba Gov. Toshihito Kumagai described the situation as highly unusual, unlike anything he had encountered before.

Among the casualties were individuals caught in a submerged vehicle, as reported by Chiba authorities and police. At Narita airport, stranded passengers were provided with basic necessities like sleeping bags, water, and snacks, with some forced to spend the night due to transport disruptions that left around 7,000 people marooned.

One affected traveler, Minoru Yamasaki, shared his experience of enduring a four-hour taxi queue and being turned away by a fully booked hotel, eventually returning to the airport for shelter. Despite the challenges, airport officials anticipated most flights to resume normal operations the following day.

The extreme weather also resulted in widespread power outages, affecting over 20,000 households, while nearly 13,000 experienced temporary gas supply disruptions due to flooding at a power substation. In Chiba city, hundreds sought refuge in government facilities, with major highways and rail services facing closures and suspensions, causing significant traffic congestion.

Meteorological authorities highlighted the unprecedented nature of the rainfall, recording 367 millimeters within a day in Chiba, surpassing the previous high of 309 millimeters in October 2013. The aftermath of the deluge left residents grappling with the aftermath of the disaster, emphasizing the need for swift recovery efforts.
