Greg Bovino, a prominent figure in the immigration crackdown associated with Donald Trump, has been relieved of his duties, sources report.
As a high-ranking commander in the Border Patrol, Bovino has been reassigned to California, where he will resume his previous position. He played a central role in the aggressive immigration enforcement campaigns spearheaded by the Trump administration in various cities, including Minneapolis.
Following significant backlash over the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti, some of Bovino’s agents are also departing from Minneapolis. This move signifies a notable shift in federal law enforcement strategy amid escalating public outrage. Tom Homan, the designated “border tsar” under the Trump administration, is set to take charge of the immigration crackdown in the city and engage with local authorities.
In response to the incident involving Alex Pretti’s death during a federal immigration operation, the Minnesota Department of Corrections (DOC) has established a dedicated website to counter what state officials perceive as ongoing misinformation from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The website aims to offer accurate information on the actual workings of state custody and collaboration with federal agencies, particularly in light of statements issued by DHS post-incident.
The online platform includes specific instances where Minnesota officials complied with federal requests to detain individuals facing deportation orders, contradicting assertions made by Trump administration officials regarding their release. It also features videos showcasing lawful and peaceful transfers of custody from state to federal facilities, refuting claims of non-cooperation by local agencies as alleged by federal authorities.
Additionally, the DOC has released statements attempting to clarify the criminal backgrounds of individuals mentioned by federal officials, including the individual central to the operation near where Pretti was killed. The DOC indicated that it had never held this person in custody and only found minor, dated traffic-related violations, challenging assertions by Border Patrol leadership regarding a substantial criminal record.
Legal expert Jimmy Gurulé commented on the rift between state and federal entities, highlighting the unusual nature of the situation unfolding in Minnesota.
