U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer announced that both U.S. President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Mark Carney will receive various options after recent trade discussions between Canadian and U.S. trade officials. Greer described the talks as positive and amicable. Canadian Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc stated that they will continue working on fulfilling Canadian expectations without specifying the exact number of upcoming meetings with Greer. LeBlanc emphasized their commitment to holding as many meetings as necessary.
Both LeBlanc and chief trade negotiator Janice Charette met with Greer for the second time this week and the fourth time in three weeks. The discussions intensified after Trump’s threat to impose 50% tariffs on numerous Canadian goods, in addition to existing sectoral tariffs set to take effect on August 19.
Reports revealed that the Americans proposed a new plan on Tuesday to reduce some sectoral tariffs, although not meeting the Canadian side’s desired extent. The U.S. is also aiming for a deal encompassing preferential access to Canadian critical minerals, security, and energy. LeBlanc and Greer are working on presenting a potential trade deal to Trump by Monday.
Recent sources disclosed that the Canadian side strongly argued against continuing talks if the August 19 tariffs are implemented, citing various trade grievances including Canada’s response to U.S. trade policies and alleged discrimination against U.S. products. The Canadian team is willing to address some of these concerns by potentially lifting retaliatory tariffs on U.S. autos, resolving the alcohol ban issue, and adjusting dairy policies.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford expressed willingness to reintroduce U.S. alcohol on Ontario shelves under fair trade conditions safeguarding key sectors like steel, auto, forestry, agriculture, and manufacturing. Ford highlighted that imposing tariffs on Canada essentially impacts American citizens. Additionally, Ford’s stance aligns with Quebec Premier Christine Fréchette’s decision to maintain the ban on U.S. alcohol until a fair agreement is reached.
