In August, spectators can enjoy the annual Perseid meteor shower, known for its abundance and brightness of meteors, coupled with favorable viewing conditions. This year’s shower coincides with a partial solar eclipse on its peak night, adding to the celestial spectacle.
The Perseid meteor shower, considered one of the top showers of the year, peaks on the night of Aug. 12-13, coinciding with a new moon. This alignment ensures optimal viewing conditions without interfering moonlight. Earth-grazers, bright and fast meteors that enter the atmosphere before heading back into space, are expected to be particularly prominent this year.
Meteor enthusiasts are advised to start viewing early around 10 p.m. or 9:30 p.m. to catch a glimpse of these bright meteors. The shower is anticipated to peak around midnight Eastern Daylight Time, potentially displaying up to 120 meteors per hour under ideal dark-sky conditions.
To maximize meteor viewing, seek a clear sky in a dark location away from light pollution and avoid using phones that can hinder night vision. The radiant point of the Perseid meteors lies in the Perseus constellation, although meteors can streak across the entire sky for an immersive experience.
Besides the Perseids, two other meteor showers, the southern delta Aquariids and the alpha Capricornids, are active, offering additional opportunities to witness shooting stars. Additionally, the kappa Cygnids shower and sporadic meteors contribute to the celestial display.
On Aug. 12, a partial solar eclipse will be visible in Greenland, Iceland, Spain, and a small portion of Portugal. Although Canada won’t witness a total eclipse, the moon will partially obscure the sun, offering a unique celestial event. Spectators are reminded to use approved solar eclipse glasses for safe viewing.
