John and Katie Meehan, who experienced the devastating loss of their daughter Genevieve, also known as “Gigi,” in May 2022, are set to deliver a letter to Downing Street. In the letter, they stress to Keir Starmer the critical need for immediate action rather than delaying the issue. Gigi lost her life in a nursery in Cheadle Hulme, Greater Manchester, where she was found suffocated after being improperly placed on a bean bag, tightly swaddled, and facing downward. Following this tragedy, nursery worker Kate Roughley was sentenced to 14 years in prison for manslaughter.
John, speaking to The Mirror, expressed the profound anguish of losing a child under such circumstances and highlighted the need for change in unsafe practices within nurseries. The couple, parents to two other daughters aged two and 10, initiated the “Campaign for Gigi” last year. The campaign advocates for clear statutory guidelines for safe sleep, unannounced and frequent inspections by Ofsted, and mandatory CCTV surveillance in nurseries. John emphasized the simplicity and necessity of these measures for ensuring child safety.
Katie raised concerns about the potential cost-cutting motives that might compromise children’s safety, emphasizing that no expense should outweigh the protection of a child’s life.
