“P.E.I. Oyster Farmers Struggle in Face of Devastating Diseases”

Oyster farming in Prince Edward Island (P.E.I.) is currently facing a severe crisis, described by one farmer as a “massacre.” Kaila Richard, who took over her family’s oyster farm after her father’s passing, is among the many farmers struggling due to the devastating impact of two diseases affecting the industry.

The diseases, MSX and dermo, were first detected in P.E.I. waters in 2024 and 2025, respectively. These parasites are harmless to humans but fatal to oysters, leading to mortality rates as high as 100% reported by some growers. The oyster industry in P.E.I. is in dire need of support to combat the widespread devastation.

Various support programs have been initiated by both the provincial and federal governments, including financial relief, mental health support, and the approval of importing disease-resistant oyster seed. However, the cultivation of disease-resistant seed is a lengthy process, taking a minimum of three years, with no guaranteed success.

Farmers are urging for sustained financial aid to survive the crisis, emphasizing the urgency of the situation. Without immediate support, the fear is that larger corporations may take over the industry, jeopardizing the livelihoods of independent farmers who take pride in their work.

The situation is reminiscent of a past crisis faced by mussel farmers in the Maritimes, where invasive species disrupted the industry, leading to many small-scale farmers selling their operations to larger companies. The need for long-term financial support is crucial to help individual farmers weather the storm and aid in the industry’s recovery.

Despite the challenges, there is hope for a better future. Farmers like Kaila and Bruce Richard are resilient and determined to fight for their family legacy and the survival of the oyster industry in P.E.I. The community is rallying together, supporting each other through these difficult times, with the hope that better days lie ahead.
