“Ottawa Secures Funding for New Bike Paths”

Eagerly anticipated bike paths in a section of Ottawa’s eastern region have now been given a construction start date following the recent announcement of federal funding. The city and federal government disclosed plans this week to allocate $5.8 million and $5.1 million, respectively, toward the initiative. The proposed project involves establishing “cycling facilities” along OrlĂ©ans Boulevard from the Ottawa River Pathway to Boyer Road and on Jeanne D’Arc Boulevard from Vineyard Drive/Fortune Drive to OrlĂ©ans Boulevard. Although the specific design of the paths remains uncertain, they are confirmed not to encroach on existing roadways. The funding from the federal government is newly allocated for this purpose.

Both OrlĂ©ans Boulevard and Jeanne D’Arc Boulevard were previously earmarked for cycling enhancements in Ottawa’s Transportation Master Plan, with budget considerations included in the city’s annual financial planning. Mayor Mark Sutcliffe emphasized that these dedicated bike paths will offer a safer and more comfortable commuting experience for individuals who feel uneasy sharing the road with mixed traffic. Once operational, the cycling facilities will link nearby residential neighborhoods with commercial zones bordering St. Joseph Boulevard and the Convent Glen LRT Station extension on the O-Train east line.

Councillor Laura Dudas of OrlĂ©ans West-Innes described the project as a “labour of love” spanning nearly a decade, tracing back to her election in 2018. Despite facing challenges such as provincial legislation like Bill 60, which limits municipalities from reducing motor vehicle lanes to accommodate bike lanes, Dudas expressed relief that the project is progressing with federal support. The compromise reached ensures compliance with provincial regulations, guiding the project’s design decisions. Construction is scheduled to commence in spring 2028, with a projected completion date set for summer 2029.
