“Ottawa Councilors Acclaimed in Rare Uncontested Elections”

Ottawa’s local elections are gearing up with Rideau-Jock Councilor David Brown securing his seat through acclamation as no other candidates submitted their candidacy before the Friday deadline. This rare occurrence in Ottawa, last seen in 2003, also saw River Ward Councilor Riley Brockington acclaimed.

Expressing his surprise at the lack of competition, Brown mentioned feeling a mix of emotions throughout the day. Richmond residents, part of the Rideau-Jock constituency, view Brown’s acclamation positively, reducing their election decisions to the mayoral and school board races.

Heather Mortimer, a Richmond resident, expressed content with Brown’s representation, giving her more time to evaluate other candidates. Speculating on the absence of challengers, she suggested a growing hesitancy to enter politics due to the current climate of threats towards politicians.

Another resident, Jeff Cobill, attributed the absence of opposition to Brown’s effective responsiveness to community concerns. Praising Brown’s understanding of the agricultural community, resident Joanna Van Gaal highlighted his rapport with local farmers.

While Brown’s victory secures his seat, he remains committed to engaging with constituents through town halls and door-to-door outreach. Brockington from River Ward, anticipating a challenger up to the deadline, plans extensive outreach to connect with constituents.

The election day is set for October 26, with a mail-in voting period from September 1 to 15 and advance voting on October 1-4 and October 16. Special ballots must be received by 8 p.m. on October 16 to be counted.
