“Øresund Bridge: Unity Across Nations”

In just one day, travelers can explore both Denmark and Sweden using a unique ‘disappearing bridge’. The bridge, known as Øresund in Danish and Öresund in Swedish, transitions from a bridge to a tunnel that appears to vanish under the ocean. This architectural wonder connects Copenhagen and Malmö and ranks as the second longest bridge in Europe.

The Øresund Bridge serves as a powerful symbol of unity and collaboration between nations, showcased during events like the Eurovision Song Contest. Comprising an 8km bridge, a 4km underwater tunnel doubling as a marine reef, and a 4km artificial island, the bridge sees a daily footfall of 70,000 people.

Operated jointly by Swedish company Svedab and Danish firm A/S, Øresundsforbindelsen features a motorway exit for authorized vehicles and a helipad for emergencies. Crossing fees vary by vehicle type, with motorcyclists paying £25.68, cars £50.77, and larger vehicles up to £178.55. The project, completed in five years at a cost of £2.3 billion, prioritized a tunnel design to avoid radio signal disruptions from nearby Copenhagen Airport.

More than 25 years post-construction, Øresund is considered a successful venture, enhancing economic opportunities for both countries and fostering a trading region of over 4 million inhabitants. Immortalized in popular culture, the bridge starred in the TV series The Bridge, adding to its iconic status and architectural acclaim.
