A barn in Rustico was engulfed in flames on Friday morning, prompting a neighbor to rescue two horses from the blaze. Firefighters were called to the scene around 11:45 a.m. and worked until late afternoon to extinguish the fire completely.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and the two horses were safely removed by the neighbor who alerted the fire department after hearing a loud noise and seeing smoke billowing from the barn. The exact cause of the fire is yet to be determined pending investigation by the fire marshal, although some firefighters speculate it may have been sparked by a lightning strike.
Emergency services, including Island EMS and multiple fire trucks, responded to the scene to support the firefighting efforts.
