Mother of Slain Son Fights for Gun Violence Prevention

After the tragic loss of her eight-year-old son to a stray bullet in August last year, Holly Roy and her family have had to adjust to a new reality. Roy expressed the challenges of caring for her family and herself while coping with the loss. The incident occurred on August 16, 2025, in their North York residence when gunshots were heard late at night, leading to Jahvai Roy being fatally wounded while in bed with his mother.

Following the incident, three youths were charged with first-degree murder. Holly Roy, of Anishinaabe, Ojibwe First Nation descent, recently visited her son’s gravesite for the first time during a life celebration on Manitoulin Island, marking a poignant moment of closure for her. She shared her journey of coming to terms with her son’s passing, acknowledging the harsh reality of the situation and the personal identity shifts she has experienced.

In the wake of Jahvai’s death, a strong community response emerged, with individuals rallying against gun violence and demanding greater political action. Holly Roy, who had been advocating for gun violence prevention since her older son survived a shooting in 2019, emphasized the need for more support services for those affected by such incidents. Through her advocacy work with grassroots and anti-gun violence organizations, Roy aims to honor her son’s memory by continuing to spread awareness and support victims of gun violence.

Reflecting on Jahvai’s kindness and empathy towards others, Roy remains committed to advocating for a safer community and ensuring that her son’s legacy lives on through her actions.
