In Mexico, the period from November to April is renowned for its sunny, pleasant, and dry climate, attracting many visitors in search of winter warmth. However, British travelers heading to Mexico must be cautious as the country has implemented strict regulations on vaping. Vaping in public spaces is now illegal, with potential on-the-spot fines, and bringing electronic cigarettes into the country via land or sea can lead to imprisonment.
Mexico had already enforced stringent laws on smoking and vaping in public areas since 2023, with fines of up to 3,000 Mexican pesos for violators. President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo introduced a constitutional reform on January 16, prohibiting the importation, sale, and distribution of vaping products, which took effect immediately.
Despite popular belief, tourists are not exempt from these rules, and customs officers in tourist hotspots like Cancún, Cabo San Lucas, and Cozumel are strictly enforcing the ban. The British government strongly advises against carrying vaping devices into Mexico, as they will be confiscated, and travelers could face fines or detention.
The ban extends to all travelers, including those on cruise ships making stops on Mexican shores. Violations could result in device confiscation, steep fines up to $12,500, and potential detainment or even imprisonment for up to eight years. Recent incidents have shown that authorities are actively enforcing the ban, with travelers facing hefty fines or jail time for possessing vapes.
Several other countries, such as India, Thailand, Singapore, Brazil, Argentina, Qatar, and Vietnam, have also implemented similar laws and bans on vaping. In the UK, the number of vapers surpassed traditional tobacco smokers, with an estimated 5.6 million vapers, constituting approximately 11% of the population.
