Last night, Labour’s metropolitan mayors showed solidarity with the Mayor of Minneapolis following a contentious ICE shooting incident that has incited outrage in the city.
Mayor Jacob Frey gained attention for his swift reaction to the shooting of Renee Good, explicitly instructing ICE to depart from Minnesota.
A recently surfaced video of the altercation, captured from the ICE agent’s viewpoint, depicted Good, a mother of three, attempting to maneuver her vehicle around and away from the agent when he fired three shots at her, hurling derogatory language at her in the process.
Contrary to assertions made by Donald Trump and JD Vance, the released footage contradicts claims that Good was intentionally trying to harm the agent and that he acted in self-defense.
Labour’s metropolitan mayors issued a joint statement in support of Mayor Frey, highlighting the crucial role mayors play in safeguarding communities and commending their emphasis on compassion and evidence-based decision-making rather than fear and aggression.
The statement, endorsed by prominent mayors including Sadiq Khan of London and Andy Burnham of Manchester, emphasizes the commitment to upholding the dignity and human rights of residents.
In response to the incident, protesters congregated outside a Minneapolis hotel believed to house ICE agents, disrupting their rest with loud disturbances throughout the night.
Despite assertions by JD Vance and Homeland Security spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin that the new video vindicates the officer’s actions as self-defense, Mayor Frey dismissed any self-defense justifications as baseless.
Law enforcement experts noted that the video did not alter their stance on the use of force but raised concerns about the officer’s training, particularly regarding the simultaneous holding of a gun and a cellphone during the incident.
The footage, according to experts, indicates that the officers did not perceive Good as a threat, as highlighted by John P. Gross, a legal expert specializing in officer-involved shootings.
The officer involved, Ross, a 43-year-old Iraq War veteran with extensive experience in Border Patrol and ICE, sustained injuries last year during an immigration arrest operation.
