“Lori Stauber’s $4.5M Gift Transforms Swift Current SPCA”

A dying wish was fulfilled as Swift Current’s SPCA moved into a new facility funded by a generous $4.5 million donation from Lori Stauber’s estate. The new shelter, named the Stauber Family Memorial Animal Shelter, opened this summer to accommodate the dogs and cats previously housed in deteriorating conditions at the old SPCA building.

Alicia Smith, a friend of the Stauber family, expressed that Lori would have been overwhelmed and thrilled to see her dream realized. Concerns about the old facility’s state prompted Lori’s decision, as she wanted better conditions for both the animals and staff.

The new shelter, designed for efficiency, offers space for up to 33 dogs and 150 cats, featuring modern suites, play areas, and quarantine facilities. The board aims to increase capacity while keeping expenses manageable by implementing cost-effective design choices.

While the new shelter is operational, fundraising efforts continue to equip the veterinary hospital, retrofit the old shelter, and complete the facility. Plans include revenue-generating services like a crematorium for end-of-life pet care to ensure sustainability.

The SPCA, serving beyond Swift Current, receives animals from the southwest Saskatchewan region. Collaborations with municipalities and funding agreements contribute to the shelter’s financial stability and service expansion. The legacy of the Stauber family lives on through the shelter’s naming and special tributes to their beloved pets.

The new facility stands as a testament to Lori Stauber’s generosity, providing a brighter future for both animals and the community.
