Lindsey Vonn Updates Fans Post Third Surgery

Skiing icon Lindsey Vonn has provided an update on her condition via social media post undergoing her third surgery due to a severe crash that dashed her Olympic aspirations in Milan‑Cortina. The 41-year-old American sustained a leg fracture at the Milan Cortina Games, necessitating immediate hospitalization following a significant accident shortly after tearing her ACL.

During the women’s downhill event, Vonn, representing Team USA, collided with a gate, leading to a loss of balance and a tumble down the slope within mere seconds of commencing her run. After initial on-site treatment, she was swiftly airlifted to a nearby medical facility for further care.

Taking to Instagram on a recent evening, Vonn shared, “I underwent my third surgery today, and it was a success. Today’s definition of success carries a whole new weight compared to just a few days ago.” Expressing gratitude for the exceptional medical personnel, as well as the unwavering support from friends, family, and well-wishers worldwide, she acknowledged the slow but steady progress in her recovery journey.

She also extended congratulations to her fellow Team USA athletes for their inspirational performances, providing her with a source of encouragement during her rehabilitation process. It was later confirmed that Vonn would require multiple surgical interventions to mend her leg, with a prolonged recovery phase anticipated, although a potential return to competitive skiing within a year remains feasible.

Drawing a parallel, skier Federica Brignone, who endured severe leg fractures and an ACL tear at the 2025 Italian Championships, made a comeback after just 10 months, competing against Vonn on Cortina’s Olympia piste.

Andrea Panzeri, the head of the Medical Commission of the Italian Winter Sports Federation, remarked, “Assessing the situation without X‑rays is challenging. Such a complex fracture can impose career limitations on an athlete, regardless of age. However, Brignone overcame a similar obstacle and successfully recovered.”

Orthopedic surgeon Filippo Pierfrancesco Calanna from Milan’s Gaetano Pini Orthopaedic and Trauma Center highlighted the influence of age on recovery, emphasizing that while Vonn possesses exceptional physical attributes, her age might prolong the recuperation process. Factors such as motivation and mindset play pivotal roles, with a potential risk of early arthritis development, leading to joint dysfunction, rigidity, and discomfort.

Despite Vonn’s resilient nature, her history of leg injuries, including a partial knee implant, could impact the duration of her recovery process, necessitating careful monitoring and specialized care.
