“Lidl Plans Rapid Expansion: 19 New Stores in 2 Months”

Discount supermarket chain Lidl is accelerating its growth strategy with plans to launch 19 new stores within the next two months. This rapid expansion, averaging one store opening every other day, will result in the creation of 640 job opportunities.

Lidl, a German-owned retail giant, has solidified its position as the sixth largest grocery brand in the UK, boasting an 8.1% market share as per recent data from Worldpanel. Since its inception in 1994, Lidl has expanded its footprint to over 1,000 locations and operates 14 regional distribution centers nationwide, employing a workforce exceeding 35,000 individuals.

The new store openings span various locations from Calne, Wiltshire, to Brough, Yorkshire. Customers visiting on opening days can enjoy complimentary food samples and have the chance to win special prizes.

In addition to the store openings, Lidl has announced a £40 million investment to revamp over 70 existing branches, including the installation of new checkout counters and larger freezer units.

Richard Taylor, Lidl GB’s chief real estate officer, expressed enthusiasm for the company’s growth trajectory, emphasizing a commitment to enhancing customer experiences and benefiting local communities. The company aims to attract a broader customer base and increase its market share through these initiatives.

Following a successful holiday season, where Lidl reported record-breaking turnover exceeding £1.1 billion with a 10% sales increase compared to the previous year, the supermarket chain is on a positive trajectory. Worldpanel data shows a 10.2% sales surge to £2.9 billion in the final quarter of last year, positioning Lidl in close competition with Morrisons, which holds an 8.3% market share.

While Lidl remains behind rival discounter Aldi, boasting a 10.5% market share, Aldi’s sales growth has slowed to 4.1% in the latest 12-month period. Aldi was recently recognized as the most budget-friendly supermarket in 2025 by consumer advocacy group Which?, with Lidl closely following as the second most affordable option.

In conclusion, Lidl’s continued expansion and investment efforts underscore its commitment to customer satisfaction and market competitiveness, positioning the supermarket chain for further growth and success in the retail sector.
