Liberal MP Shaun Chen has announced his resignation at the end of this week due to ongoing health issues stemming from a car accident last year. Representing Scarborough North since 2015, Chen shared on social media that injuries sustained in the accident have resulted in significant health challenges, hindering his ability to travel to Ottawa as required by his role. Following discussions with his family, Chen expressed that stepping down as a Member of Parliament is the best decision. Prior to his parliamentary role, Chen served as the chair of the Toronto District School Board.
Prime Minister Mark Carney commended Chen for his efforts in advocating for young individuals and fighting against racism, extending well wishes for a full recovery and future endeavors. Chen’s resignation joins a series of MPs leaving their positions this summer, including former Liberal cabinet minister Steven Guilbeault and Conservative MP Cathay Wagantall. Conservative MP Larry Brock is set to step down in mid-September to pursue a role at the Brantford Crown attorney’s office, while NDP MP Alexandre Boulerice plans to vacate his Montreal seat by summer’s end to contest provincially for Québec Solidaire in October.
Chen is scheduled to resign on Saturday, marking the conclusion of his parliamentary tenure.
