Labour MP Calls for National Heart Screening Program

A member of Parliament from the Labour Party is advocating for increased screenings to safeguard individuals with heart conditions. Amanda Hack is urging the implementation of a national screening program after statistics revealed that 12 individuals under the age of 35 die suddenly each week in the UK due to undiagnosed heart issues, with 80% of these cases showing no prior symptoms.

The call for action follows the sudden death of Isabella Wright’s partner, who passed away in his sleep. Ms. Hack, representing North West Leicestershire, emphasized the tragic loss of young lives that could have been prevented with routine screenings such as ECGs and Echocardiograms.

Ms. Hack highlighted Italy’s successful national screening program for young athletes, which has significantly reduced sudden cardiac deaths by 90%. Her plea was echoed by Suzanne Rowan from the charity Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY), who lost her husband to cardiomyopathy failure in 2018.

Since its establishment in 1995, CRY has screened approximately 343,000 young individuals. Dr. Steven Cox, CEO of CRY, condemned the reliance on bereaved families to fund heart screenings, emphasizing the injustice of families having to raise funds to prevent tragedies that could have been averted with proper testing.

The Department of Health and Social Care assured that they are examining the evidence for screening for risks of sudden cardiac death. They plan to launch a public consultation on this matter in the near future, expressing condolences to the Rowan family for their loss.
