Kremlin Confirms CIA Director’s Talks with Russian Officials

The Kremlin confirmed on Wednesday that U.S. CIA Director John Ratcliffe engaged in discussions with Russian intelligence officials during his recent trip to Moscow, clarifying that there was no meeting with President Vladimir Putin. Describing the visit as “semi-routine,” President Donald Trump highlighted its potential significance without specifying its purpose.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov disclosed that Putin was briefed on the outcomes of the visit, which occurred amid the prolonged conflict in Ukraine and stalled peace efforts between the U.S. and Iran. However, Peskov refrained from divulging specific details or topics covered during the discussions, emphasizing that communication occurred through security services.

Trump hinted at the possibility of positive outcomes stemming from the visit during a radio interview, particularly in relation to resolving the Ukrainian conflict. Notably, the last similar high-level interaction between U.S. and Russian intelligence officials was observed in November 2021, when Ratcliffe’s predecessor, William Burns, met with Putin before the escalation of the conflict in Ukraine.

When questioned about the potential impact of such visits on strained U.S.-Russia relations, Peskov acknowledged the value of intelligence agency contacts in fostering cooperation, even during challenging diplomatic phases. He emphasized that while these interactions were positive, it was premature to gauge their overall effect on ameliorating the current crisis in bilateral relations.
