Iran has vowed to retaliate against the newly expanded U.S. sanctions targeting its economy, expressing confidence in its major trade partners’ resistance to Washington’s pressure tactics. The U.S. Treasury Secretary, Scott Bessent, announced the measures on Monday, marking almost six months of unresolved conflict. Despite enduring decades of severe U.S. and international sanctions, Iran’s economy remains resilient under the pressure.
In response to the potential economic threats from the U.S., Iran’s Economy Minister, Ali Madanizadeh, suggested a military response and a further reduction in oil exports from the Gulf. He emphasized Iran’s readiness for such actions, stating, “Our defense stance is no longer purely defensive; our enemies should anticipate an offensive move.” Additionally, he highlighted that China and Russia have not endorsed the U.S. sanctions, and he expected other nations to follow suit in resisting them.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps spokesperson, Brig.-Gen. Hossein Mohebbi, warned of severe repercussions against U.S. vital interests and energy chokepoints if Iran’s infrastructure faced threats. As the Iranian rial hit a record low, concerns over the country’s economic stability heightened, with skyrocketing prices of essential goods and a forecasted contraction in GDP.
Despite the escalating tensions, experts speculate on China’s response to potential sanctions on its banks due to its significant trade ties with Iran. China emphasized that its cooperation with Iran adheres to international law and should not face interference. The U.S. Treasury Department imposed new sanctions on various entities but did not target suspected Chinese financial institutions facilitating Iran’s oil trade.
The ongoing conflict between the U.S. and Iran, characterized by intermittent strikes and diplomatic impasse, continues to pose challenges. As oil prices fluctuate and Iran’s disruptive capabilities in the Strait of Hormuz persist, the region faces uncertainties over stability and security. Efforts to negotiate a diplomatic resolution and restore energy flows in the region are ongoing, with mediators like Pakistan reporting progress in talks with Iran.
The conflict’s toll, including casualties and economic repercussions, remains significant, with Iran’s military capacity weakened, economy strained, and political leadership facing uncertainties. Amidst the complexities of the situation, the prospect of a lasting resolution to the U.S.-Iran conflict remains elusive.
