The Michael Donovan Public Library ceased operations at the Waterford Valley Mall on Topsail Road two months ago when its lease expired. Expressing frustration and disappointment, Josh Smee, vice-chair of the Friends of the St. John’s Public Library advisory board, highlighted the library’s importance to the community despite its modest size. Smee remains optimistic about the possibility of reopening the library in the west end, underscoring the void felt by library users in the absence of the facility.
In response to inquiries, Janelle Simms, a representative from the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure, indicated ongoing consultations with Newfoundland and Labrador Public Libraries to determine the next steps. Appealing to potential landlords, Smee urged those with available space in the west end of St. John’s to engage with the relocation process actively.
