Hamilton police announced that a location which had agreed to host an anti-immigration group’s national conference has rescinded the reservation. The Dominion Society of Canada had planned its DomCon event with speakers from Canada and abroad on August 29 in the “Hamilton area.” The police did not disclose details about the venue or the reasons for the cancellation.
A coalition of Hamilton organizations, including the Hamilton Anti-Racism Resource Centre (HARRC), had advised venues against hosting the event and created a guide to identify white nationalist groups. The mayor of Hamilton also issued a warning to venues and businesses.
Despite the cancellation, the Dominion Society is reportedly seeking an alternative venue under the name Ridgeway Media. HARRC emphasized the need for vigilance in reviewing bookings and inquiries to prevent the event from taking place.
The group’s co-founder, Daniel Tyrie, affirmed that the event, known as DOMCON26, is proceeding as planned despite opposition. Tyrie stated that the event is sold out, with the Dominion Society aiming to promote Canadian heritage and immigration reform, including the deportation of millions of immigrants.
Critics have condemned the Dominion Society, labeling it as a promoter of fear and hate. The group’s association with white nationalist organizations and its anti-immigration stance have sparked backlash from community groups and politicians.
The Dominion Society’s plans to host speakers like Austrian white nationalist Martin Sellner have raised concerns. HARRC urged venues to verify associations with DomCon and offered assistance to those who may have unknowingly booked space for the event.
B’nai Brith Canada called for federal officials to prevent foreign extremists from attending the conference, citing concerns about promoting hatred and extremism in Canada. The organization has engaged with law enforcement and border authorities to address the situation.
Requests for comments from relevant authorities regarding security measures and entry denials for the event were met with responses emphasizing case-by-case assessments and security considerations. The Hamilton Police Service declined to provide specific details about their operational plans for addressing potential risks associated with DomCon 2026.
