Millions of Gmail users are in for a significant and long-awaited update. Google has officially announced the rollout of a new feature that allows users to change their email addresses, offering a solution for those who are dissatisfied with their current Gmail account name.
Google stated, “Your digital identity has received an upgrade.” Users now have the ability to modify their Google Account username, the part before @gmail.com, which is used for signing in to various services like Gmail, Photos, and Drive.
One key benefit of this update is that the original email address will still function alongside the new one. This ensures that users will not miss any messages sent to either account.
According to Google, all data stored in the accounts will remain unaffected, including photos, past messages, and emails. While this update is a welcomed change from the tech giant, it is currently only available in the US, leaving UK users waiting for their turn.
For users in the US, Google advises accessing account settings and selecting personal info, then email, followed by Google account email. If the option to change the Google account email is visible, users can proceed to choose a new and unique username. The original email address will remain as an alternate on the account. However, users are limited to creating a new address only once every 12 months. It is recommended to review settings to check for the availability of the update.
