“Glooscap First Nation Launches Kluskap Market”

A First Nation in the Annapolis Valley of Nova Scotia has recently launched a new market to support local fishermen and vendors by providing a platform for them to sell their products within the community. The concept for the market, known as Kluskap Market, originated during a community engagement session back in 2015 near Windsor, N.S., as discussed by Michael Peters, the CEO of Glooscap Ventures, the financial entity of Glooscap First Nation.

After more than a decade of development, Kluskap Market had a soft opening in July, followed by an official launch last Sunday. Peters emphasized the significance of self-determination, highlighting that the generated revenues and profits will stay within the local community rather than being sent elsewhere. Tammy Belanger, a member of the band and owner of Greenleaf Enterprises in Wilmot, N.S., shared her positive experience of selling flowers at the market and lauded the exposure and benefits it brings to the community.

The market offers a diverse range of products including local fish, shellfish, fresh produce, baked goods, as well as items from local artists and entrepreneurs such as clothing, beauty products, and preserves. Belanger expressed her commitment to supporting local businesses and sourcing local products whenever possible. Additionally, Peters noted that the market aligns with Glooscap’s vertical integration strategy, which involves owning and managing various stages of the supply chain.

Kluskap Market is partially powered by solar energy with plans to expand its renewable energy usage further. The market is strategically located off Highway 101, attracting visitors like Mike McGinnis from Mount Uniacke, who appreciated the offerings and left with live lobsters. Future plans for the market include additional vendor stalls and an upcoming ice cream stall in 2027. Peters mentioned that the building was designed with potential expansion in mind, contingent upon the market’s success.
