Fugitive Slovakian Arrested at Winter Olympics

A man from Slovakia, who had been on the run from Italian authorities for 16 years, was apprehended upon his return to the country to support his nation at the Winter Olympics. Despite his efforts to cheer on the Slovakian ice hockey team, the 44-year-old individual, whose identity remains undisclosed, was intercepted by police before reaching the arena. The arrest stemmed from outstanding warrants issued in 2010 related to a string of thefts he allegedly committed, resulting in a pending sentence of 11 months and seven days.

Law enforcement successfully located the fugitive when he checked into a guesthouse on the outskirts of Milan, voluntarily coming back to Italy despite being a wanted criminal. His intention to attend the ice hockey event at the Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena was thwarted, leading to his immediate detainment and subsequent transfer to the central San Vittore Prison. Meanwhile, Slovakia’s men’s ice hockey team achieved a surprising victory by defeating Finland 4-1 in their Olympic opener, setting the stage for upcoming matches against Italy and Sweden.

Slovakia, having secured a bronze medal in Beijing four years ago when NHL players were excluded, made a comeback to the Winter Games after a hiatus since Sochi 2014. The Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics has been marked by notable events, including the unfortunate injury of Team USA’s Lindsey Vonn and Jake Paul’s fiancée, Jutta Leerdam, clinching a gold medal in speed skating. Despite Team GB’s absence from the medal podium so far, hopes are pinned on athletes like skeleton world champion Matt Weston, poised for a shot at gold in the upcoming final.

For sports enthusiasts, the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games are scheduled from February 6 to 22, with over 850 hours of live action available on discovery+ via Prime Video.
