Fort Smith Residents Encouraged to Seek Support

Residents of Fort Smith are urged to support each other and utilize mental health services in the wake of a recent community-wide shelter-in-place directive, according to local resident Mildred Martin. The small community of around 2,000 individuals was placed under the order for over 13 hours following a violent incident that left three people injured early on a Saturday in the N.W.T. locality.

Martin emphasized the crucial role mental health professionals play in providing support to individuals during such challenging times. She underscored the importance of seeking assistance as the incident can have a profound impact on the community’s well-being.

Upon receiving the early morning alert instructing everyone to remain indoors, Martin promptly took measures to secure her residence, expressing her concerns about safety. She recounted the efforts she made to ensure her eight-year-old grandson remained occupied throughout the day, engaging him with reading and electronic activities to divert his attention from the shelter-in-place situation.

The community, including Martin’s grandson, continues to grapple with the repercussions of a previous shooting incident in 2022, which had a lasting effect on many residents’ sense of security. Martin acknowledged the lasting impact of past traumatic events on the community’s psyche, noting that it took considerable time for residents to regain a sense of safety.

Expressing gratitude towards the emergency responders, healthcare workers, and law enforcement officials who swiftly responded to the recent incident, Martin highlighted the collective efforts being made to address the situation and ensure the safety of residents.

In a related development, the shooting occurred as the opening event of Fort Smith’s Fireweed Festival, a local music celebration, was concluding. Tawna Brown, a visitor from Yellowknife attending the festival, recounted her disbelief upon receiving the stay-indoors alert early in the morning. Brown, who had been camping in Queen Elizabeth Territorial Park since Thursday, expressed shock at the proximity of the incident.

Following the lifting of the lockdown order later that Saturday afternoon, the Fireweed Festival is set to proceed as scheduled for the remainder of the weekend. Law enforcement officials have assured the public of ongoing investigations into the shooting, with an increased police presence expected in the community.
