“Former Toronto Councillor Mike Layton Announces Comeback Bid”

Former Toronto city councillor Mike Layton has declared his intention to run once more to represent the University-Rosedale ward he previously served, after a break of four years from city hall. Through a statement shared on the social media platform X, Layton expressed his desire to contribute to electing a progressive mayor and council capable of enacting substantial changes. He emphasized the opportunity to create a city that is affordable for all residents and one that fosters a sense of pride in its inhabitants.

Having served as councillor for University-Rosedale from 2010 to 2022, Layton had decided not to seek re-election in the last municipal election to prioritize spending more time with his family. Known for his consistent advocacy on environmental issues and road safety initiatives, Layton notably championed projects like the Bloor Street bike lanes, which have now been approved for removal by the current administration.

In his recent statement, Layton outlined his plans if re-elected, focusing on advocating for affordable housing, improved public transit, and the installation of solar panels on rooftops to decrease reliance on fossil fuels. Notably, Layton’s stepmother, Olivia Chow, currently serves as Toronto’s mayor, having been married to his late father, Jack Layton, who transitioned from a Toronto councillor to federal politics, ultimately leading the New Democratic Party.

The upcoming election for the councillor position in Ward 11, University-Rosedale, features a competitive field of 10 candidates, including incumbent Dianne Saxe, who succeeded Layton following his resignation. For a comprehensive list of candidates vying for the position, the city’s official website provides detailed information.
