“Fired Masterchef Host Gregg Wallace Apologizes for Inappropriate Comments”

Fired Masterchef presenter Gregg Wallace has acknowledged that the derogatory remark leading to his termination was “foolish, defensive, and egotistical.”

In his first public statement since being dismissed, Wallace, 61, expressed regret for his actions but contended that the suggestive comments on Masterchef were not more severe than those on Channel 4’s The Great British Bake Off.

He emphasized that he never intended to make anyone uncomfortable and now comprehends why participants may have been hesitant to confront his behavior, fearing it could impact their chances of winning the show. Wallace was let go from the BBC program in July last year amidst allegations of inappropriate behavior and comments, allegations he strongly refutes.

His recent apology, which was extensive and widely shared on Instagram, included an admission of being “foolish, defensive, and egotistical.” Wallace stated, “Let’s begin with acknowledging my undeniable mistake. When the media initially reported the accusations against me, I took to social media and dismissed the complainants as ‘middle-class women of a certain age.'”

He continued, “It was a foolish, defensive, and egotistical response. I felt cornered and reacted poorly. There is no justification for it. It was hurtful and incorrect. It does not align with my true beliefs, and I apologize for my words.”

Reflecting on his past actions, Wallace admitted his failure to listen, reflect, and show respect during challenging times. He mentioned the importance of listening rather than speaking when facing criticism.

The father of three further explained that his sense of being cornered stemmed from a situation he still struggles to fully grasp. He described how, for two decades, he portrayed a lively, humorous persona on television, fitting into the lively workplace environment cultivated by the show’s producers.

Regarding the humor on the MasterChef set, Wallace defended the use of “colorful” language and jokes, likening them to those on The Great British Bake Off. He acknowledged the presence of sexual jokes and innuendos, attributing them to the nature of food-related humor prevalent in the industry.

Wallace clarified that his participation in such banter was in line with the studio culture and his role as a presenter aiming to create a relaxed atmosphere for contestants. He believed his behavior was encouraged and perceived as humorous by those around him until changes in standards emerged in 2018.
