Final Missing Climber Found in Broad Peak Avalanche

A search operation conducted on Friday successfully located the body of Mallory Geis, an American climber who was the final missing member of a 10-person international mountaineering team that perished in an avalanche on Broad Peak several weeks ago. The discovery was confirmed by a mountaineering official and local authorities. Geis’s remains were discovered by a group of local volunteers, as reported by Irfan Arshad Khan, the president of the Alpine Club of Pakistan. This expedition marked Geis’s maiden endeavor to scale an 8,000-meter peak in Pakistan.

Hailing from San Antonio, Texas, the 39-year-old Geis had recently announced via social media her decision to close her Pilates studio and venture into uncharted territories, anticipating a journey filled with mountaineering gear such as helmets, harnesses, and crampons. In a statement released earlier this month, her family described her as a radiant presence cherished deeply by her loved ones and friends.

The conclusion of the search mission, initiated on July 31 following the tragic avalanche on Broad Peak, brought closure to the ordeal faced by the expedition team, which was led by the renowned climber Nirmal Purja. Purja, also known as Nims Dai, a former British Army soldier of Nepali descent, gained fame for conquering the world’s 14 highest peaks in a groundbreaking 189-day feat back in 2019, a remarkable accomplishment showcased in the Netflix documentary “14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible.” Notably, his record was surpassed in 2023.

The inhospitable terrain of northern Pakistan where the incident occurred is notorious for its perilous conditions including avalanches, falling ice and rock, extreme altitudes, and rapidly changing weather, making climbing expeditions in the region inherently risky.
