At least six individuals have lost their lives during the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement actions in the United States, with the latest fatality occurring in Minneapolis where a man was shot dead by ICE agents.
The victim, identified as Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old intensive care nurse, was shot 10 times within five seconds by ICE officers while participating in a protest against their presence in the city. Reports indicate that a witness provided CPR to Mr. Pretti, who sustained at least three bullet wounds to his back.
Following the incident, Alex’s parents, Michael and Susan, condemned Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noemi’s assertion that agents fired in self-defense after the victim reacted violently. They vehemently denied the administration’s claims, labeling them as false and despicable. According to them, Alex was unarmed when attacked by ICE agents.
State governor Tim Walz has demanded the removal of ICE agents from Minneapolis, denouncing their actions as unacceptable. This shooting occurred only three weeks after a similar fatal incident in the same city.
Alex Pretti was the second individual in January to be fatally shot in Minneapolis during immigration-related operations. Renee Good, who was shot three times, including once in the head, by an ICE officer on January 7, was the first victim. Video footage indicated that Good was turning away from the ICE officer when the fatal shots were fired. Officials from the Trump administration have consistently defended the officer’s actions, claiming he acted in self-defense.
The tragic events surrounding these deaths have sparked outrage in Minnesota. The US Justice Department has refused to share information regarding the shootings with state authorities. In a separate incident, ICE agents fatally shot Silverio Villegas Gonzalez during a traffic stop in suburban Chicago. The victim, a 38-year-old line cook from Mexico, was killed after dropping off a child at daycare that morning.
Investigations into these deaths are ongoing. In another incident, Jaime Alanis, a 57-year-old labourer from Mexico, died after falling from a greenhouse roof at a southern California farm during an immigration-related operation. Additionally, Roberto Carlos Montoya Valdez, a 52-year-old from Guatemala, was fatally struck by a vehicle while attempting to evade immigration officers outside a Home Depot store in southern California.
Another tragedy unfolded when Josue Castro Rivera, a 24-year-old from Honduras, was fatally hit by a pickup truck on a highway in Norfolk, Virginia, as he tried to escape authorities during a traffic stop. Josue was en route to a gardening job with three passengers when ICE officers stopped their vehicle.
These incidents have raised concerns and drawn attention to the actions of ICE agents in various enforcement operations across the country.
