A fatal incident occurred during a rave in the northern Swiss canton of Aargau, resulting in the death of one individual and injuries to five others early Sunday, according to local authorities and media reports. The police are currently in pursuit of a suspect, with motives and details surrounding the incident yet to be fully determined.
In a statement, the cantonal police disclosed that a 22-year-old woman succumbed to her injuries at the scene, while four men and one woman, aged between 24 and 27, were transported to a hospital for treatment of varying degrees of injuries. All the victims are Swiss residents, and their identities have been withheld in compliance with privacy regulations.
The law enforcement officials were alerted to the shooting at approximately 2:30 a.m. in Aarau, the canton’s capital located 46 kilometers west of Zurich, as reported by police spokesperson Pascal Wenzel to Swiss public broadcaster SRF. The shooting incident coincided with the Aarau Rave VOL. 7 event held at the Schachen district’s horse racing track.
A search operation is currently in progress, urging local residents to avoid the area as police, firefighters, and ambulances are present in significant numbers. Authorities in Freiburg, Germany, are also assisting in the search for the suspect, according to the German news agency dpa.
Eyewitnesses initially mistook the gunfire for fireworks, with chaos ensuing as individuals were instructed to take cover. Following the conclusion of the rave, the shooting occurred, prompting police to relocate the remaining attendees to a nearby gym for safety.
Authorities have urged anyone with footage or images of the incident to come forward and share them with the police for further investigation. The Aargau Racing Club, which operates the venue, expressed deep sorrow for those affected by the tragic events and commended the emergency responders for their swift and dedicated efforts.
Swiss DJ Tekibo, who was part of the event’s lineup, expressed profound sadness over the incident on Instagram, emphasizing that such violence has no place in the atmosphere of freedom and security that techno and rave culture should embody.
Aarau, a city with a population of approximately 22,300 residents, lies around 30 kilometers south of the German border.
