The family of Renee Good has spoken out following the fatal shooting of another individual by federal law enforcement agents over the weekend. Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old nurse working at a veterans’ intensive care unit in Minneapolis, was fatally shot in broad daylight by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers while trying to assist a fellow protester. His family described him as a “good man” in a poignant statement condemning the Trump administration’s support for the killing, the second such incident in Minneapolis within a month.
In a separate statement, relatives of Ms. Good, who was the first victim of a shooting involving an ICE agent in Minneapolis, expressed their distress over the recent events. They criticized the presence of ICE agents in the city, emphasizing the fear and heartbreak caused by the shootings. The family called for an immediate end to ICE activities in Minneapolis, stating that the situation had escalated beyond its intended purpose of targeting criminal non-citizens.
The fatal incident involving Ms. Good occurred on January 7 when she was shot by an ICE officer while trying to drive away from him in her car. Despite claims by top Trump officials labeling her as a “domestic terrorist,” no evidence has been provided to support this accusation. The DHS alleged that Ms. Good attempted to ram the ICE officer with her car, while Mr. Pretti was said to have posed a direct threat to federal officials with a gun. However, video evidence has raised doubts about the government’s version of events, suggesting Ms. Good was attempting to avoid the confrontation.
Video footage of Mr. Pretti’s shooting depicted him holding a phone in one hand and appearing to have nothing in the other hand when a gun, for which he had a legal license, was reportedly removed from his pocket. Former President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama referenced these videos in a statement, criticizing the Trump administration for dismissing the incidents without thorough investigation and calling for an end to the violence.
The community continues to demand justice and accountability in the wake of these tragic events.
