“Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library Inspires Hamilton Children”

Dolly Parton’s enduring legacy lives on through her Imagination Library initiative, which has provided close to 40,000 books to children in Hamilton. At the Eva Rothwell Centre, operations manager Chelsey Simmonds expressed the community’s deep connection to Dolly and the positive impact she has had.

The country music icon passed away recently after a brief battle with cancer, as confirmed by her publicist Marcel Pariseau. Starting the library project in 1995 as a tribute to her father, Dolly aimed to inspire children to read. In Hamilton, the program has benefitted 1,785 children since its inception in 2020.

Notably, Dolly acknowledged the local organizations as the true heroes for embracing her vision and making it a reality. Children aged up to five who enroll in the program receive a free book monthly by mail, carefully selected by childhood educators to aid in their developmental journey.

With over 400 partners nationwide, the Canadian branch of the program continues to provide books to children in the lower city, with hopes of expansion through community donations to cover book and shipping costs. Simmonds emphasized the commitment to carrying forward Dolly’s vision.

Acknowledging the program’s impact, Simmonds shared how her son sees Dolly as his “book lady,” feeling a personal loss upon hearing the news of her passing. Another parent highlighted the program’s role in their child’s development, especially how it sparked an interest in reading and Dolly’s music.

In Six Nations of the Grand River, over 1,200 children have benefited from the program, offering accessibility that traditional programs might lack. Stacy Styres LaForme, Early Years Outreach Manager at Six Nations Social Services, expressed gratitude to Dolly for her contribution to the community and reaching out to young children.

Reflecting on Dolly’s impact, Hamilton author Steacy Easton emphasized the singer’s multifaceted nature, from her humble beginnings to her diverse career. Notably, fans and fellow musicians worldwide paid tribute to Dolly, highlighting her generosity, laughter, and songwriting prowess.

Easton praised Dolly’s versatility in connecting with various audiences and acknowledging her complexity. They noted that while some may have had high expectations of Dolly’s advocacy work, it’s essential to recognize the breadth of her influence and the challenges she faced in navigating diverse audience expectations.
