Carney Urges Putin: ‘Get Out of Ukraine’

Prime Minister Mark Carney has stated that he intends to have a brief conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin if they meet at the upcoming G20 summit. The summit, hosted by the U.S. in Miami, has seen a desire from President Donald Trump to have Putin’s participation, with the Kremlin hinting at the possibility of Putin attending.

At an unrelated press conference, Carney was questioned about his potential discussions with Putin at the summit in December. Carney emphasized that his message to Putin would be straightforward: urging him to “get out of Ukraine, return all of Ukraine to Ukraine, and end the ongoing conflict that is resulting in significant casualties,” keeping the conversation concise.

Prime Minister Mark Carney asserts that if Russian President Vladimir Putin attends the upcoming G20 summit in Miami, he will convey a clear message for Putin to ‘get out of Ukraine.’

Carney was also questioned about his stance on the Trump administration’s decision to invite Putin. While acknowledging valid reasons to exclude Putin, Carney emphasized that it is the host’s prerogative to extend invitations.

Putin has refrained from attending G20 summits since the commencement of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, with an active arrest warrant issued against him by the International Criminal Court.

Recently, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent convened G20 finance ministers in Asheville, N.C., with Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov in attendance.
