Canada’s foreign affairs minister announced that five Iranian officials will be sanctioned for their activities in the Strait of Hormuz, which are deemed to disrupt international peace. Emphasizing the significance of free navigation in the strait for global trade and energy security, the minister’s statement highlighted the need for Iran to de-escalate and uphold international navigation rights.
The sanctioned individuals, including high-ranking members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), were identified in a press release from Global Affairs Canada. Among them are Ali Abdollahi, Lt.-Col. Ebrahim Zolfaghari, Ebrahim Azizi, Shahram Irani, and Hamid Hosseini, who have been involved in activities that pose a threat to the critical international waterway.
These sanctions mark a total of 232 individuals and 260 entities from various sectors in Iran’s security, intelligence, and economic domains that have been targeted by Canada, aiming to address the ongoing conflict in the region and uphold global stability.
The enforcement of these sanctions aligns with efforts to resolve the conflict involving the U.S., Israel, and Iran, following an initial peace agreement that has yet to be realized since the outbreak of the war in February. With tensions escalating and oil supply disruptions persisting, there is growing pressure on global leaders to find a resolution and restore stability to the vital Strait of Hormuz.
